Barzilai gave the EAM people a letter, written in Hebrew, in which he thanked Moses for his help and wished him “goodbye.”
Testimony from the ‘Bequest of Asser Moissis.’
“Immediately after he mentioned the above, Barzilai came to me, as I was waiting for him at the intersection of Stadiou and Eduardou Lo streets. I went at once to my house in Psychiko, where Yacoel and Markezis were, and conveyed to them the above information. At first, Yacoel expressed the opinion that Barzilai should follow Wisliceny’s instructions, so that in this way we would be in a position to be informed about the Germans’ plans. Afterwards, however, we all agreed that this would facilitate the Germans in implementing their plans, and since doubts were expressed as to whether Barzilai would follow our recommendations or the orders of the Germans, it was decided to request that EAM forcibly abduct Barzilai from his house at 26 Alikarnassou Street and transfer him to the mountains. […]
Barzilai was abducted without resistance and was initially taken to a basement in Kolonaki, where his beard was shaved, he was disguised, and the following day he was secretly transferred to Agrinio and from there to the free mountainous regions of Greece. Before his departure, having been informed that I was one of the organizers, he handed to the people of EAM a letter addressed to me, written in Hebrew, through which he thanked me and wished me a good reunion.”
